A vocabulary for better buying

ABA. WPC. SPC. PVC.
Look beyond the label.

These names do not all describe the same thing. One can identify a polymer, another a trade category and another the way the board is built.

Four labels.
Four questions to ask.

Ask for the bill of materials and the cross-section before deciding that two ranges are equivalent.

Wall-panel terminology · meaning depends on the product
NameWhat it can describeWhat still needs checking
ABAAn A–B–A substrate architecture. The offered reference has denser PVC/mineral skins around a foamed centre.Actual materials, density, layer balance, reinforcement, finish and joint.
WPCConventionally wood-plastic composite. Some wall-panel documents instead use Water Proof Core.Whether wood fibre is present; what the supplier means by the initials.
SPCA trade description commonly used for mineral-filled polymer boards. Wall-panel versions can be dense, foamed or layered.Formulation, cross-section, thickness, mechanical behaviour and intended use.
PVCThe polymer family; a marketed panel can also contain substantial mineral filler.Solid, hollow or layered geometry, filler content, finish, flexibility and connection.

Our ABA construction
has no wood-fibre core

That is a statement about the offered product, not every listing using the same initials.

Calling this product a wood-plastic composite would misdescribe its PVC/mineral substrate. At the same time, a supplier may use WPC for Water Proof Core rather than for wood-plastic chemistry. Resolve the wording instead of relying on the abbreviation.

ABA does not itself rule wood in or out. Other suppliers can use an A–B–A arrangement with different materials. Our specialist range focuses on the wood-free mineral-filled PVC sandwich described in the technical reference.

Likewise, PVC and SPC wall-panel names are not always a clean chemical divide. Mineral-filled PVC appears in both conversations; formulation and geometry determine the actual board.

Ask for proof
you can compare

Use the same three questions for every candidate.

01

What is inside?

Request the actual substrate materials and a cross-section. Separate the decorative film from the board underneath.

02

How does the full panel behave?

Check the production format, density, flex, cutting and joint fitting on a full-size sample.

03

What has been tested?

Match the certificate and report to that exact product, surface and mounting arrangement, then approve the intended installation system.

Flooring names and wall-panel names should be evaluated in their own application. A familiar flooring abbreviation does not establish the performance of a large-format wall board.
